Premchand is not relevant today because the people say thus. In fact he is relevant even today because the problems he depicted some eighty-ninety years back are still existent in toto. The play by 'Image' The play 'Desi Murgi Vilayati Chaal' based on his story 'Vinod' raised the difficulties faced by a boy culturally sound but entrapped into the web of his misguided class fellows. The reason behind this was his unmitigated infatuation for a charming westernised girl in his class. The pals of Pandit Chakradhar (a student) notices the unusual soft feelings in the inner core of Chakradhar's heart and plan to get the most of it.They write fake love letters in the name of Lucy (girl classmate) praying Chakradhar for changing his conservative Indian get-up in favour of a westernised one. The erstwhile Sanskritised Chakradhar spends good amount to buy jacket and suit and throwing parties to friends. He also gets his top braid cut from head and take to smoking and drinking. Though he is surprised to see that the girl who writes such amatorial missives to him, is almost indifferent when comes across him in the class or elsewhere. Still, Chakradhar does not want to ponder much over these uncomfortable thoughts and thinks that Lucy loves her very much and this is why she sends frequent love letters to him. Ultimately he braces up himself and shows advancements towards Lucy while a party is on. Lucy is infuriated. When Chakradhar asks her why then she sent love letters to him, she says she never wrote such letters and threatens him to complain to the principal.

Now Chakradhar comes to senses and ask his friends why they played such a nasty prank with him. The friends are now remorseful as Chakradhar might be rusticated from the college if the girl makes a complain to the principal. They talk to Lucy but she is not relenting. Ultimately she asks for a fine of Rs. Five thousand or Sit-ups for fifty times. Chakradhar being a poor boy starts exercising sit-ups. Now the girl is humbled for her adamant behaviour and admonishes the boys who brought such embarrassments to herself and Chakradhar. The boys feel sorry of their mischief.

Direction and Concept of Shubro Bhattacharya were amazingly perfect. The way he showed the day-dreaming of Chakradhar in dramatised musical form with a big pink heart beaming on the background screen was effective. The classroom scene was also natural and effective. Hiralal Ray played the role of Chakradhar in superb manner. His pronunciations in Sanskritised accent, facial expressions, body language and modern dancing skills were excellent. He seems to be a rare breed of actors. Aditi Singh in the role of Lucy also showed her mettle in the role of a westernised proud girl. The boy who hatched the fooling plot, also acted remarkably well along with his team of college students.

The characters of Professor, Postman, Munshi Premchand, opener-compere and others gave good performance in acting. Sushil Kr, Vivek Kr., Nishant Priyadarshi, Abhishek Arya, Shandilya Tiwari, Sadip Tiwari, Ranu Babu and Vijay Kr. did justice with their respective characters. Vivek Kumar's script was deftly adapted in nowadays context and it never turned out that this is based on a story written some ninety years back. Sudhanshu Shekhar's Sound-controls and Rajan Kr. Singh/ Jitu's Light management were faultless. Rohit Chandra, Gaurav, Nisha, Ravi, Samir and Abhishek Arya were talented musicians. Ramesh Singh's costumes and dresses were perfect. Bal Mukund, Santosh, Ranu and Aditi extended their valuable support to make this drama a grand success.

Seminar organised on the four hundredth death anniversary of Shakespeare (a report by Rajan Kumar Singh)

Shakespeare- the uncrowned king of pure expression
(Report by Rajan Kumar Singh)
(हिन्दी में और अधिक चित्रों के साथ यहाँ पढ़ें: http://biharidhamaka.blogspot.in/2017/06/1062017.html)

On the occasion of the four hundredth  death anniversary of the great playwright Shakespeare a joint function was organized in Patna by Sanskritikarmi (theatre-artists) and Bihar Secondary Teachers Association for opposing violence in society. The topic of discussion was  ‘Shakespere of our time’ and the venue was Madhyamik Shikshak Sangh Bhawan, Jamal Road, Patna.

While addressing the program, Mr. K. K. Narayan said that regardless of the impact of films in the society today, Shakespeare's plays are an integral part of our society today. Referring to the world-famous play 'Hamlet', 'Othello', 'Macbeth' and 'Julius Caesar', Narayan said that this drama tells the character of the society and the individual and their mutual relationships with the society. Selection of characters was his specialty. Generally, when someone opposes nowadays, he is considered a leftist and when he is ready to negotiate he is termed a rightist. Shakespeare was such a playwright, even critics also believed that he was really great. The power to know the invisible makes the artist great. He has lived the character of his plays himself. He had no school degree and he had learnt in the courtyard of the nature. In a sarcastic note, Mr. Narayanan said that when one person speaks and everyone hears it is a ‘Shok-sabha’ (Condolence) and when everyone speaks and no one listens, it is called Lok Sabha (Parliament).

Arun Kamal, a well-known poet of Hindi, said that William Shakespeare was an English poet, dramatist and actor who was one of the important and famous writers of the English language. The name of the theater is the Greek origin, which means to see. At the time of Shakespeare it was christened as the theater. Arun Kamal said that Shakespeare is my favorite poet. I have gone to his house twice. He said that great actor Charlie Chaplin had said that Shakespeare, who comes from a rural background, puts us in doubt. There is happiness in his drama as well as the gloom. There is humor too which means  all forms of life are in Shakespeare's play. Referring to Shakespeare's 'Macbeth' drama, Arun Kamal said that many people have committed suicide while working in this drama. Condition is that the people of the theater still do not do this drama with the same name, and consider it as a bad omen. Shakespeare used approximately 20000 English words, while at that time English had about 120,000 words. He made 17,000 words himself. His play became very popular in the Persian Theater. Mr. Arun Kamal concluded by saying that those people who play Shakespere’s play become Shakespere at that moment.

Professor of English at TPS College Chhotlal Khatri said that today the whole world is the platform of Shakespeare. Today Shakespeare belongs to England as well as the whole world In whom literature, playwright and researcher have been working continuously. Pro. Khatri said that Shakespeare had a strong hold on nature, that is why he shows all forms of human life in reality with his play. At the same time, he talked about support provided to Shakespeare by the government at the time of British imperialism. But the fact that his works are pure expression makes him great.

Anish Ankur compered this function of discussion on Shakespeare at’ our time.  The program was also addressed by psychiatrist Dr. Vinay Kumar. Presiding over the function, poet Alok Dhanwa said that Shakespeare changed his society from his plays and tried to create a society that is devoid of exploitation. Imperialism creates consumer at the level of body and suppresses the mind. Shakespeare is the creator of the mind. Vote of thanks were offered by Mrityunjay Sharma. A condemnation motion was passed unanimously on the issues of suicides of farmers in the country, shooting incidence and the irregularities in Bihar's education system was passed unanimously.

In this seminar organized on the occasion of 400th death anniversary of Shakespeare, against the violence by the people of Sanskrikarmi (theater-artists) and the Bihar Secondary Teachers Association many distinguished personalities were present. It was attended by poet Alok Dhanva, Vijay Kumar Singh from the teacher association, poet Rajesh Kamal, Shayer Pankajesh, film Reviewer Vinod Anupam, Suman Kumar, Suresh Kumar Hajju, Rangeshami Ramesh Kumar Singh, Randhir Kumar, Arun Shadwal, Jai Prakash, Shambhu Kumar, Akk Many painters, teachers including YG, Abhishek Nandan, Ranjit, Anchit, Vinay Kumar, Ranjit, Gautam Gulal, Gajendra Sharma, BAT Secretary Kumar Anupam, Saket Kumar, Suman Saurabh, Gyan Pandit, Raushan Kumar, Vicky Rajveer, Situ Tiwari, Sunil Bihari and many teachers and other intellectuals were present.

'Trilokinath Zindabad' - a stage play performed by Image Art Society on 13.5.2017 in Patna

Ethical dilemma of lower middle class
(इस आलेख का हिन्दी संस्करण यहाँ पढें: http://biharidhamaka.blogspot.in/2017/05/1352017.html)

The urban hapless class is truly represented by a clerk Trilokinath who has not got any promotion since last fourteen years. He is the senior most clerk in his office and there is nothing eerie in his aspirations. But the point here is that he belongs to lower middle class who must not possess any kind of rights and must not dream any good experience. The real unfortunate matter is that his biggest enemies are not the persons seated in higher economic rungs but his own colleagues who are facing the same destiny.  This paradox has been presented in the story ‘Sifarasi Chitthi’ authored by eminent national writer Bhishm Sahni in a superbly realistic manner. And  this was dramatic portrayal on the stage with the help of  a group made mostly of green actors.  Subhro Bhattacharya, the prodigious director showed his mettle in portraying the same.

STORY: Trilokinath is a honest and punctual clerk working since fourteen years without any promotion. His aspiration is justified to get promoted to head clerk though his colleagues make fool of him because of his dream of getting promoted.  It is revealed that he was the most promising student of his class in BHU while studying in college when his then professor (now a retired head of education department) visit his office and meets his director. Both are friends. The professor thumps the back of  Trilokinath publicly and mince no words in his eulogy. All of the colleagues of Trilokinath and even the boss are taken aback. Not only this, he offers to write a letter to the authorities in favour of Trilokinath recommending his promotion. Trilokinath feels himself on cloud nine.

When Trilokinath returns home he shares the good news of expected recommendation from his ex-teacher for his promotion. Initially his wife shows no interest in these mundane kind of official jargon. Though she suddenly feels the news very interesting when she thinks that promotion may mean scope of great deal of illegal income. She showers all her love and affection on her husband in hope of the large amount of illegal income he may bring in future.  But when Trilokinath proclaims that he would not accept any bribe, she is again disenchanted. Trilokinath tries to sleep though in vain. He is restless thinking that if his ex-professor writes a letter in his favour then his Work Superintendent would not like it and would put adverse remark in his annual confidential report which would put a scar in his so far a flawless career. If his ex-professor writes such favourable letter for him, his own colleagues would outcast him from their group and would make him a butt of ridicules. Trilokinath is unable to sleep thinking these disturbing matters. His wife tries to console but Trilokinath is so disturbed internally that he snubs her badly.

After an absolute sleepless night, Trilokinath comes to the conclusion that the letter of recommendation would prove a bane rather than a boon for him. He goes to the doorsteps of his ex-professor and requests him not to write a recommendation letter for him. When he reaches his office, his colleagues come to know all that happened and treats him in the familiar impolite tone but to everyone’s surprise, Trilokinath feels it soothing.

REVIEW: This was definitely a director’s play in which most of the actors followed the lesson taught to them.  Subhro Bhattacharya is a skillful director full of innovative acumen. The way he used a team of actors in back side of the stage with lamps or other articles in their hands and swaying their bodies in rhythm with a tune played in background  truly protryed the inner dilemma of Trilokinath. The dreaming of Trilokinath was adeptly shown by the sequence of a group play in which Trilokinath is chasing a file which is moving through the hands of all the employees having superb maneuvering skills.

Also, an acrobatic actor stole the hearts of all the audience with his stunning body movements which was actually meant for and fully succeeded in showing the interactions of the feelings of Trilokinath at the climax of the play. Of course, some actors  like Ranu Babu (Trilokinath), Amit Kumar (Office Director),  Alok Arav (Office Superintendent) and Harendra Singh (ex-Professor) created their own space successfully. Also, Shandilya Manish Tiwari as ‘Chanawalla’, Nishant Priyadarshi, Vijay Kumar, Sandip Tiwari, Anoj Kumarand Avinash Kumar (all of them as Office Employees) acted well as per the demand of the director. And last but not the least, Kunti Singh, the heroin of the play, acted her best and gave her valuable support to the other eminent actors like Ranu Babu.

The play was presented by Image Art Society in which Rajiv Roy’s  lighting, Sudhanshu Shekhar’s souond and Jeetu’s make-up were absolutely appropriate as per the needs of the play.

''Peele Scooter Wala Aadmi' staged in Patna on 29.4.2017 in Jashn-e-theatre

Materiality of insignificant queries
(हिन्दी में यहाँ पूरी समीक्षा यहाँ पढ़ें- http://biharidhamaka.blogspot.in/2017/05/20.html?m=0)

Manav Kaul's story 'Peele Scooter Wala Aadmi' raises many points in one go - Why after all a bit of information is concealed from some member of family? Why people do not respect the natural inquisitive instinct of others? Why people do not feel for the sentiments of others and live a life devoid of human sentiments and that too only in a mechanical manner. The theme is so abstract as hardly to be imbibed by a lay viewer and I feel myself one of them even after twenty  years experience of an avid viewer.

There is everything in the life of the main character (hero) except the peace of mind. Two ultimately simplistic but unanswered questions haunt him day and night- One is "Why Dadaji was not intimated about Indira Gandhi's death?" and another is "Why his father rode invariably scooter of yellow colour?" His father was very concerned and careful about him though he never felt necessity of answering these insignificant questions. And these very questions are those which have taken away all happiness from the life  of the hero. There is a lover girl of the hero who always starts her talk with her lover as ".. then, should I take off my clothes now?" The hero is bemused of this bizarre love relationship in which there is nothing to do except to go for physical intercourse.

The mother of the hero is very affectionate towards her son but obviously a stern woman for her father-in-law i.e. Dadaji. Dadaji is fond of watching TV and he does not watch the program, actually he lives the viewing experience of them. He submerges his identity into the scenes of the program. Unfortunately he loses speech after some years, still he likes watching TV. This is not liked by the hero's mother because of some very superficial reasons. Ultimately she bans her father-in-law (Dadaji) to sit the room where TV is installed. Now that senile man has to live in complete loneliness without any implement for his entertainment being confined into his small room. Even the hero avoids entering his room as he fears  that if Dadaji tried to speak some anger about the atrocities on him then he would not be able to speak even "meal' and 'water' as he could speak only three-four words in a whole day.

After some days, Dadaji dies and the hero is still unable to get answers of his simplistic two questions. Though he knows the answer. The answer of the first question is "Dadaji was not intimated about Indira Gandhi's death because he could have insisted on watching the funeral and 'bhajan' programs telecast on TV and thereby could have disturbed the hero's mother."  The answer of the second question is "His father used only yellow scooter because he did not like to scooter in 'bhagwa' (ocher) clolour which might have denoted extreme faith in one religion and he did not like the green colour as well for that might have denoted him as the supporter of extreme faction of other community."

REVIEW: The director-cum-producer Swaram Upadhyay must be applauded for showing the guts of choosing a play of extremely abstract theme. His manner of showing sequences of soliloquy and dreams were fabulous in which the inner mind of the hero was being acted by the supporting actors around him.  The actors Vivek Kumar, Abhishek Arya, Saurabh Kumar, Vinita Singh and Swaram Upadhyay were fine with their roles and the remarkable ones included Hero, Dadaji, beloved of the hero, father of the hero and mother of the hero. Jafar and Rajiv Roy gave their valuable support from back of the stage.
