Conflict of Platonic and sensual love
STORY: The story of Rabindra Nath Togore is too poignant and can move even a stone-headed person. Mahamaya was a girl born in a royal family and her neighbor Rajeev was a low caste boy with humble family background. Both were good friends and a secret love relationship existed between them. As the family of Mahamaya could not arrange enough dowry to get a matching bridegroom, Mahamaya was still unmarried at the age of twenty-four. Rajeev was nineteen and had been avoiding the suggestion of his guardian to get married because of his dream of having Mahamaya as his wife.
One day, Rajeev brought Mahamaya to a lonely temple and proposed to marry her. Mahamaya was stunned at this unexpected proposal from a low-caste person. soon she saw her brother approaching them and she unhesitatingly made it clear before her brother that she would become the wife of rajeev someday in future. The brother of Mahamaya was furious but did not say anything.
The next day Mahamaya was brought to a crematory where an old person was waiting for his imminent death. Mahamaya was married to that dying old man and the one day after she became widow. and with a great pomp and fanfare she was forcibly offered to the flames of pyre in accordance with ‘sati pratha’ system. Nevertheless a powerful storm arrived and it rained cats and dogs. People fled from the place of pyre and Mahamaya somehow saved her life and fled from the pyre in half-burnt condition. She changed her cloth and saw the mirror. She found that her face has changed because of burning marks and charred cheek. She put on a veil on her face and went to Rajeev's house. Rajeev was happy to see Mahamaya and accepted her as his wife even after accepting her condition that he would never uncover her veiled face. Both went to a new village to live together.
The days passed on, Rajeev felt himself restless as he was unable to see the beautiful face of his Mahamaya. One day he broke the rule and uncovered the face of Mahamaya. He was terrified to see the charred face of Mahamaya and screamed loudly. Mahamaya left the house of Rajeev leaving no traces of her forever. The story depicts beautifully the conflict of platonic and sensual love within the mind of the same person.
REVIEW: The performance of the artists were superb and Mahamaya, Rajeev, Pagla Baba and others did justice with their respective roles. The stage-design with the face of Kali goddess and hutment was perfect. The script of the play was very wisely created.

आत्मिक और शारीरिक प्रेम का अन्तर्द्वन्द्व
कथा: रवींद्र नाथ तोगोरे की कहानी बहुत मार्मिक है और एक पत्थर दिल व्यक्ति को भी हिला कर सकती है। महामाया एक शाही परिवार में पैदा हुई लड़की थी और उसके पड़ोसी राजीव एक साधारण परिवार के साथ एक कम जाति के लड़के हैं। दोनों अच्छे दोस्त थे और उनके बीच एक गुप्त प्रेम संबंध मौजूद था। जैसा कि महामाया के परिवार में एक रिश्ता पाने के लिए दहेज की व्यवस्था नहीं की जा सकती थी, महामाया अभी भी चौबीस वर्ष की आयु में अविवाहित थे। राजीव उन्नीस का था और अपनी पत्नी के रूप में महामाया के अपने सपने के कारण शादी करने के लिए अपने अभिभावक के सुझाव को टालता आ रहा था ।
दूसरे दिन, राजीव महामया को एक अकेला मंदिर में लाया और उससे शादी करने का प्रस्ताव दिया। महामया एक कम-जाति के व्यक्ति से इस अप्रत्याशित प्रस्ताव पर दंग रह गई थी। लेकिन तभी उसने अपने भाई को उधर आते देखा, वह अपने भाई के सामने यह स्पष्ट कर दिया कि वह भविष्य में किसी दिन राजीव की पत्नी बन जाएगी। महामाया के भाई बहुत गुस्से में थे लेकिन उन्होंने कुछ नहीं कहा।
अगले दिन महामाया को एक श्मशान में लाया गया जहां एक बूढ़ा व्यक्ति अपनी मृत्यु के लिए इंतजार कर रहा था। महामाया की शादी उस बूढ़े आदमी से कर दी गई और एक दिन बाद वह विधवा हो गई। उन्हें 'सती प्रथा के अनुसार चिता की आग की जबरन रूप से पेशकश की गई थी। फिर एक शक्तिशाली तूफान आया और मुसलाधार बारिश हुई। लोग भाग गए और महामाया ने किसी तरह अपना जीवन बचाया और आधा जला हालत में छिप गए। उसने अपना कपड़ा बदल दिया और आईने को देखा। उसने पाया कि उसके चेहरे को जलन के निशान और जले हुए गाल के कारण बदल गया है। उसने अपने चेहरे पर एक घूंघट डाल दिया और राजीव का घर चली गई । राजीव महामया को देखने पर खुश हुआ और घूँघट कभी न हँटाने की उसकी शर्त को स्वीकार करने के बाद भी उसे अपनी पत्नी के रूप में स्वीकार करता है। दोनों एक साथ रहने के लिए एक नया गांव जाता है।
जैसे ही दिन बीत गए, राजीव अपने आप को बेचैन महसूस कर रहे थे क्योंकि वह अपने महामाया के सुंदर चेहरे को देखने में असमर्थ थे। एक दिन उसने नियम तोड़ दिया और महामाया का चेहरा का घूँघट हटा दिया। वह महामाया के डरावने चेहरे को देखने पर डर गया और जोर से चिल्लाया। महामाया ने राजीव का घर छोड़ा और हमेशा के लिए अपना कोई निशान नहीं छोड़ा। कहानी एक व्यक्ति के दिमाग में आत्मिक और शारीरिक प्रेम के बीच द्वंद्व को दर्शाती है।
समीक्षा: कलाकारों का प्रदर्शन शानदार था और महामाया, राजीव, पगला बाबा और अन्य ने उनके संबंधित भूमिकाओं के साथ न्याय किया। काली देवी और झोपड़ी के चेहरे वाले मंच-डिजाइन एकदम सही थे। नाटक की स्क्रिप्ट बहुत बुद्धिमानी से बनाई गई थी।
