The blinding effect of power to rule
(हिन्दी में कथा-सार पढ़िये अंग्रेजी टेक्स्ट के नीचे)
'
Chharmatiya' is a mirror of nowadays when the blinding force of power is so rampant that even a mother could not save her own son from the pernicious effect of wielding power. The play was presented under personal finance scheme of the Cultural Department, Govt. of Bihar. 'Chharmatiya' a naive village woman is very much affectionate to her child. This child is actually an adopted son by Chharmatia who had been brought to her by her husband when left abandoned in new born state. She never wanted her to become a politician as she knew well that politicians are the most corrupt genre on this earth. But as per the saying of a fortuneteller hermit, the boy performs excellent in academics and then become a minister of the provincial government.
After becoming the minister, the son comes to village to take his parents with him. But Chharmatia and her husband deny to join him in his city life as they love their village and the inhabitants thereof. Now, Chharmatia expects that some welfare works for the village will be initiated by her son who is now a minister. But the son is fully indulged in revelry and he has no time to think about welfare works. He likes to spend time in drinking and enjoying the company of dancer girls. After some time Chharmatia herself decides to go to the city and meet her son for the welfare of the village. After a lot of difficulties, she somehow reaches the doorstep of the minister's bungalow which is her son's. She is insulted there not only by the gatekeepers but also by her own son who refused even to identify her. On this, she is shocked and falls ill. After a few days, she leaves this world.
Satish Prasad Sinha has written this poignant play which does not limit itself to the story of the characters shown. In fact, it raises the basic question why even a talented and affectionate people typically turns into a monster just after gaining power to rule. Why they forget their mother-father and village?
Neha Sharma has directed well as far as the job of taking remarkable works from the actors is concerned. Chharmatiya acted excellent and was well accompanied by her husband. A sporty man made everyone laugh in the hall by his impressive dialogue delivery of "..lakho tare aasmaan me..". the leader, the seer, neighbour woman, villagers, seller woman, passerby men and others acted well. It was observed that almost 80 percent of the activities on stage was concentrated near a village hutment which was installed in right corner of the stage. The general rule is that most of activity should be performed on and about the centre stage. So it would have been better if the hutment had been erected in the middle of the stage. The surroundings nearby the bunglow were fine though it required some garish decoration to give an effect of a VIP bunglow. There was no space for eunuch's dialogues in this taut play on a very serious theme. On the whole, this play raised very pertinent issue and the message was well conveyed to the audience by the artists. For this, the whole team should be congratulated.
