War of spirit and body
(A report of stage-drama by Hemant Das 'Him')

The play 'Raja Salahes' is based on a very popular folklore in Mithila where a king who is a well-wisher of his subject has to wage a war with an unjustifiable king named Chauharmal. But the people from where Chauharmal hails from still regards Chauharmal as their hero. The fight does not only signifiy the war of land but much beyond to it, is a manifestation of a clash of ideologies. At one end, Raja Salahes was inclined more towards spiritual pursuit whereas on the other side, King Chauharmal had chosen a path capitalizing on physical strength. And ultimately the supremacy of spirit is established over the bodily strength. The King Salahes makes a lot of soliloquies  and King Chauharmal is busy with oiling his stick with his four stout supporters. Catering to the fancy of large section the audiences, It was also replete with love scenes and dance sequences of the belle group.

Raja Salhes is a deity adored in the downtrodden class of Mithila. Chauharmal was also a king of warrior clan and ruled a nearby area to where the jurisdiction of Salahes ended. Chauharmal is also regarded as a god in his area. You may still find the temples in the name of Salhes and Chauharmal in their respective zones. This play shows a fierce fight between these two kings.

The presentation succeeded in creating intense humour with a tinge of important messages useful to one's individual and social life. The play was well scripted by Rohini Raman Jha and directed by Sanjay Chaudhary who showed his adept skill of taking out the maximum from the actors even from those actors who were comparatively novice ones. Sundaram is a well-known Maithili singer of Delhi and proved his talent of composing tailor-made music best suited to this play. added his music into the superb presentation. It was staged in the auditorium of Din Dayal Upadhyay College, Dwarka Sector-3, New Delhi.
