The presentation of drama of one of the most popular story of the Fanishwar Nath ‘Renu’ the undisputed king of ‘aanchalik sahaitya’ (regional style of literature) by director Sharada Singh was a masterpiece for the viewers of Patna. While preparing the script of the drama, Punj Prakash has been able to preserve the soul of the story told by Renu to the utmost level. The presentation scheme of Ajit Kumar and music direction of Sanjay Upadhyay were superbly artistic as required in the depiction of pristine regional culture of the specific geographical area of North east Bihar.
The anger filled with restlessness of Birju’s mother in anticipation of missing out the show of ‘nautch’ and the subsequent sparkle while enjoying rode of bullock-cart towards the fair were remarkable. The childish pranks of Birju and his sister entertained all of the viewers. Birju’s father, the village-women and other actors acted perfectly. The lighting, sound, make-up were as per the needs and the set-design prepared with a big wheel and hutment etc. were creating natural ambience of a village.
‘Lal paan ki Begam’ is a signature story of Fanishwar Nath ‘Renu’ because of it's sheer truthfulness in depiction of regional simplicity. The mother of Birju has cherished a dream of watching the ‘nautch’ in a fair organized some miles away. For going there a bullock-cart is required and Birju’s father has not returned home with that bullock cart.
Birju’s mother is irritated from within thinking that her husband is not cooperating with her in her cherished project of attending the fair to watch the ‘nautch'. She starts behaving like a capricious woman for a while and is seen abusing and misbehaving with every one comes to her sight.
A very simple query by Makhania Bua “Won’t you go to watch the nautch?” makes her furious. She retorts vehemently that she is not as free from all sides as to be able to to go to the nautch program . The inherent vituperative verbal attack is unbearable to Makhania Bua as she has no husband or issues. She straightly goes to the water bearer women collecting water from well. The folk empathise with the sentiment of insult meted out to this old woman by the haughty misbehaved lady i.e. Birju’s mother. The talk makes circles that this nouveau riche egoist lady Birju’s mother has highbrowed this poor old lady Makahania Bua. One of the neo-enthusiast among criticizer group christens Birju’s mother as ‘lal pan ki begum’ just to scoff at her. A sudden shoot up of the anger of Birju’s mother over this new name given to her, is quite obvious.
Then Birjus’s father arrives and transpires the pensive mood of his wife. With the help of a little flattery he is able to persuade his wife. He is ready to take his wife and children to the nautch program means 'dance of a dancer'.. Birju’s mother is on cloud nine. Putting on the red colour saree and brassiere she now rattles like a ‘Lal Pan ki Begum’i.e. queen of hearts.
The actors in this realistic show were Sharda Singh, Suman Kumar, Rishikesh Jha, Saurabh Safary, Vinita Singh, Sarika, Bharti, Gautami, Mansi etc. Make-up man was Jitendra Kr. Jitu, Dresses were by Ruby Khatoon, Stage-designer was Umesh Sharma. Musicians were Md. Jony, Rajesh Ranjan, Vinod Pandit, Md. Noor, Mukesh Rahul, Ruby Khatoon. Lighting was by Raj Kapoor.
