The wings of a woman
A village girl reading her book to
make her way of getting wings of self-development, a woman hugging a sparrow the bird on
the brink of extinction and a woman feeling herself as if in a cage convey
enough about the plight of the woman in general in our society and her
environment she lives in. Artist Niva
has put several of her exquisite paintings made up with oil on canvas.
Niva was born and brought up in Bokaro Steel City and is a Bachelor in Fine Arts from Delhi College of Fine Arts. Her present abode is her parents-in-law's home in Patna from where she brings forth her outstanding art pieces. After her stints in cartoons and drawings with Navaneet Prakashan, Sumit Prakashan and periodical like Competition Wizard she concentrated on colours and prepared some of her pieces. Her husband Saurabh Chandra (a finance professional in Dubai) and father-in law Arbind Kumar Sinha (a retired bureaucrat from Govt. of Bihar) were amazed at the vivaciousness of the human figures. Not just the feelings of the faces were impressive but the themes displayed were also contemporary ones that were communicated with astounding precision. Saurabh cheered his wife up and Arvind Sinha patted his daughter-in-law on the back.

She went to Dubai with her husband for a while but a true believer in pious Indian tradition she thought it to be a good idea to stay with her parents-in-law looking after them in their old age. As she had left her job after her marriage, the artistic urge remained unsatisfied for a short while leading to some sort of uneasiness in her disposition. She shared her problem to her parents-in-law who encouraged her to paint more and more feeding her inclination for art.
Though she had already tasted the compliments
of large groups of people when she had put solo exhibition of her paintings
in past in some societies of Kandiveli
and Goregaon. This was when she stayed in Mumbai with her husband. But this maiden
exhibition in the prestigious gallery of Bhartiya Nritya Kala Mandir of Patna
has brought her in limelight in Patna
circle to an extent that Dr. Ratna Purkayastha, Head of Programme of
Doordarshan, Bihar was presnt on the inauguration function. Even veteran artist
Shyam Sharma was likely to come but he could
not attend as he was out of city.
Niva says Bihar has an envious heritage of Madhubani painting but stressing solely upon that is not enough. We must promote other artists also who work on the themes of today rather than merely the epic centred ones. She further says many times people confuse comparing crafts for the art. Both are actually different. Whereas crafts are mass level production mainly for commercial use, one piece of the painting takes much more time and intensity of thought and can be afforded only by a few connoisseurs.
